Nutritional supplement may be effective in fighting fat

A popular dietary supplement may help overweight people to diet and even control adult-onset diabetes, according to a new study.

In the UK almost 10 million adults are classified as obese so the finding could be of great value.

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a naturally occurring fatty acid found in beef and many dairy products, is used as a nutritional supplement. In animal studies, CLA has proved effective in fighting several types of cancer, atherosclerosis and diabetes, enhancing immune functioning and energy and helping to control weight.

The first results of human studies suggest that it could be equally effective for people who are overweight or obese. Studies conducted in Norway and the US found that it helped overweight adults to lose weight and fat, maintain weight loss and retain lean muscle mass.

In a further Norwegian study, people who ate their normal foods and took CLA lost statistically significant amounts of weight.

Lead researcher Dr Michael Pariza, of the University of Wisconsin in Madison, said participants dieted and exercised and, as expected, most initially lost weight. But, as often happens, many regained some of the weight lost when they stopped their diets.

The people who did not take CLA put pounds back on at a ratio of 75 per cent fat to 25 per cent lean, which is typical for most people, said Dr Pariza.

However, those taking the supplement regained less fat and retained more muscle mass.

Dr Pariza said, “The ratio was more like 50 per cent fat and 50 per cent muscle. That is very significant. It leads to the idea that CLA could be useful in weight management. Our results also showed that CLA made it easier for people to stay on their diets.”

The Norwegian study had similar results.

In addition, a further Norwegian study suggests that CLA could help people take off weight as well as reduce body fat. The 60 overweight people who participated in the study were not allowed to diet, yet those who took CLA experienced an average weight loss equivalent to a 160-pound person losing two or three pounds over 12 weeks.

Researchers have linked the weight loss to the supplement. Dr Ola Gudmundsen, managing director of Scandinavian Clinical Research and one of the principal investigators, said that while he cannot be sure that the subjects lost weight because they took CLA, he believes “there is an indication that it is”.

The findings could have great significance for those with type II diabetes. The ability to improve the fat to muscle ratio could potentially help them control the condition much more easily, and may even delay the onset of the disease.

The findings were presented at the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society.
